Shelley and Mary eloped at 4.15 in the morning of 28 July 1814, accompanied by Mary’s stepsister Claire. On 2 August they reached Paris, where they purchased this notebook, and began a journal. Mary made her first contribution to the journal on the second page by lightly completing a sentence: ‘Mary was there. Shelley was also with me.’ As they continued their journey through France, Switzerland and Germany, she began to add entries of her own, and took turns with Shelley at writing up the day’s events until their return to England in September. The entries up to that date were later published (in a revised form) as part of History of a Six Weeks’ Tour, 1817.
