Album of Mughal paintings and calligraphy
This album was assembled for a member of the imperial Mughal family, Shāh Shujāʿ, the second son of the Emperor Shāh Jahān. A variety of paintings were mounted on to large sheets, and the margins filled with highly decorative floral borders. The album is a glorification of the rulers of the Mughal dynasty: Tīmūr, Akbar, Jahāngīr, and Shāh Jahān, whose majestic figure, resplendent in fine clothes and jewellery, and proud profile, shown within a gold nimbus, dominate a number of glittering pages. He is depicted as a world ruler, enthroned and holding an orb representing heaven and earth; as a great patron of the arts and, in the painting displayed here, as a connoisseur of precious jewels.
